Be it from the shore of a sea, the bank of a river, or the deck of a boat, Eorzea’s anglers must constantly account for a wide range of factors to optimize their success, including season, time, place, tools, and bait. In addition, the sometimes perilous nature of desirable fishing holes, be they on or offshore, above or below ground, prompts many fishers to employ the protection of more combat-oriented professions.

Fisherman acquire ranking points by successfully hooking a fish and catching a fish. Fisherman also acquire experience points for physical level from catching a fish/items from fishing.
Fisherman in FFXIV uses both the traditional Fishing Rods of older Final Fantasy games, and an additional tool called a Spear and Gig, for what they call [Spearfishing]. Different commands are given on the menu one is the [Fish Command] and the other [Spearfish] Command.
After locating a fish-able spot, and executing the Fish interaction through your menu. The fishing requires players to set, the Depth of the water you fish, and the wait, jig and cancel command. To successfully hook a fish the general consensus is that after the fishing line reaches the acquired depth, players execute the wait command until they get a “nibble” or “bite” alert on your chat log. The general consensus agrees that to hook (not catch) a fish it is way more successful on a “bite” alert, although it is possible with the “nibble” alert. (I have been able to hook fish without ever having to use the wait command. There are 5 areas in the jig cursor, left, middle left, center, middle right and right, in order to hook the fish, you must choose the right “hook area”. Hook areas use a process of elimination as long as the depth has not been changed, for example, you tried the center and didn’t hook anything, try any of the other four areas until your hook the fish. Hook areas generally change after a fish is hooked or the depth is changed.)
To successfully catch a fish, you need to jig and place your round marker in relation to the position of your fishing rod, in early levels mostly the position of the rod is in the middle or slightly left, therefore the successes of player catching a fish and gaining experience points is relative to the players reflex to stop the round indicator right in the middle/slightly middle left of the semi circle positional meter.
To successfully spearfish – you need a secondary weapon and locate a spearfishing spot.
Spearfishing spot is similar to other gathering spots such as botany and mining spots, in which there’s a “wisps glow” around a location, where the interaction prompt will show up and you can choose spearfish as a command.
Spearfishing is different from traditional fishing interaction as there’s no mini-game involved.
