In case you don’t already know, Final Fantasy 14 will not be using an traditional leveling system. The developers have decided to take a different path, differentiating it from the previous Final Fantasy games. This was done to remove some of the “grind” factor from other games, where hours were being spent performing certain actions in order to attain high player stats.
Instead of levels, weapons will be an important factor for developing your character. Equipping a certain weapon or items will change your class, and by performing activities “in that class” you will gain skills and experience. This means that you can become a very high level character (such as a farmer) without ever having to fight.
Additionally it’s been confirmed that there will be a level cap when the game is released. Apparently it will be removed as Square Enix said “in due course”.
